Currently, Kenya has only 7 pediatric gastroenterologists who serve over 20 million children below 18 years of age who contribute to almost 40% of the population.

About Us

Our founding director, Rose Kamenwa, is a trailblazer in the field. As the first trained pediatric gastroenterologist in Kenya and Eastern Africa, she brings over 20 years of invaluable experience. Rose spearheaded the establishment of pediatric gastroenterology services across key institutions in Kenya, including Kenyatta National Hospital, Gertrude’s Hospital, and Aga Khan University Hospital. For 14 years, she served as the lead consultant at Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, shaping the landscape of pediatric gastrointestinal health care through her expertise and commitment. Rose is not only a distinguished pediatric gastroenterologist but also a certified lactation management consultant with over 30 years of experience in teaching and providing breastfeeding support.

Her unwavering dedication lies in transforming NPGC into a Center of Excellence, focused on enhancing outcomes for infants, children, and adolescents dealing with gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional disorders. Additionally, Rose is deeply committed to supporting mothers facing breastfeeding challenges. At NPGC, we aspire to be a beacon of quality care, aiming to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of our young patients and their families.

Mentorship

The imperative connection between gastrointestinal diseases and the crucial phases of children’s growth and development underscores the urgent necessity for accessible gastrointestinal healthcare services to address this escalating demand. The genesis of the Nairobi Pediatric Gastroenterology Center was spurred by the recognition of this pressing need. Presently, Kenya is home to only seven pediatric gastroenterologists tasked with serving a population of over 20 million children under the age of 18, constituting nearly 40% of the total population.

In a concerted effort to bridge the glaring gap in trained specialists within this domain, NPGC has taken a proactive approach by providing mentorship opportunities for aspiring pediatricians interested in forging a career in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. This initiative aims to nurture a new generation of healthcare professionals equipped to address the specific healthcare needs of children grappling with gastrointestinal issues in Kenya.
